Meat Shawarma

Skip the take out and make shawarma at home! #HamOntFHT dietitian Diana makes this Lebanese favorite in the slow cooker. It's a very good source of iron. Iron is an important mineral for red blood cell health. So boost your iron and #breakfoodboredom with her recipe.

Makes 8-10 servings

Ingredients

2-3 lb of roast meat (cut into 2-3 pieces)

1 cup wine (or 1/3 cup vinegar+ 2 Tbsp lemon juice)

2 onions julienned

2 Tbsp olive oil

2 Tbsp Shawarma spice mix* + 1tsp salt if spice mix does not have salt in the ingredient list

*Note: you may find a ready shawarma spice mix at a Middle Eastern store, but if it is not available, you can mix:

  • 2 tsp allspice

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp nutmeg

  • 1 tsp cardamom

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Mix all the ingredients and keep in the fridge preferably overnight or for at least 2 hours before cooking.

  2. Cook in a slow cooker on HIGH for 3-4 hours or LOW for 6-8 hours.

  3. Shred the meat when done cooking.

  4. Serve it with tahini sauce, chopped parsley, pickles, salad and whole wheat pita or rice.
